Technician installing a garage door opener on the ceiling rail

A new garage door opener in Bonita Springs, with battery backup

When the power fails in a storm, an opener without a backup battery turns the door into a manual lift. A new one keeps working for a while on battery, runs quieter and pairs with your car and phone. We balance the door first, install the opener and set up every remote with you.

When a new opener makes sense

  • Parts for your current opener are no longer made, or it keeps failing.
  • There's no battery backup, and during the last outage the door had to be raised manually.
  • A chain drive rattles under a bedroom; our noisy door page covers the other causes.
  • Your new car or your phone won't pair with the old unit; start with remotes, keypads and cars.
  • Salt water reached the wall control, sensors or wiring; read what to check after the water.
  • You're getting a heavier new door, and the opener should match it.

Choosing the drive

Chain drives are strong and simple. Belt drives are quieter for rooms next to or above the garage. Wall-mounted openers sit beside the door and turn the spring shaft directly, which frees the ceiling for storage racks or a tall ceiling. We match the opener to how heavy the door is, and list the options on one written quote.

Installed and set up with you

We check the springs and balance the door first, since a new opener can't fix a heavy door. Then we mount the opener, set force and travel, install and align the safety sensors, and program your remotes, keypad and car buttons while you're there. You get the settings and warranty papers in writing, and a text on the date we agree to make sure it's still running right.

If the old opener only needs a part, opener repair may be the better route. When nothing moves at all, start with our troubleshooting guide, and for a car stuck inside, call it an emergency.

Permit

The city's list of work exempt from permits (Sec. 10-21) covers some low-voltage systems but doesn't name garage door openers, so we check with the Bonita Springs building department before installing one and tell you their answer.

New opener questions

For most homes, yes. Storm season and summer outages are when you most need the door to open, and a charged battery gives you a handful of trips with the power out. It also spares you raising the door manually.

Plan on two to three hours, which covers taking down the old unit, setting up the sensors and programming each remote, the keypad and the car buttons.

Most will, and we program them before leaving. Certain older cars need an adapter before they'll talk to newer openers, so tell us the car's year and model when you book.

Usually not, because an opener plugs into a ceiling outlet. If there's no outlet near where the opener goes, a licensed electrician has to add one; we'll point that out when we look at the garage.

Start with a photo
